Real Simple- how to: groom your brows in 3 easy steps

February 02, 2010 By: ten20 Category: Uncategorized, pluck

Screen shot 2010-01-29 at 4.48.46 PM

How To: Groom Your Brows

The key to getting a good shape? Being precise and light-handed, says Sania Vucetaj, owner of Sania’s Brow Bar, in New York City. She prefers the gentle precision of tweezing over the excavation that is waxing. Here, her foolproof method.

What You Need
Makeup brush, tweezers, brow pencil, scissors

Follow These Three Easy Steps

1. Shape the inner edges.

To determine where your brow should begin, hold a makeup brush vertically against the bridge of your nose, says Vucetaj. Pluck any hairs that fall outside this line and close to your nose. “Grip tweezers near their points for the best control and yank hairs swiftly in the direction of growth,” she advises. This prevents them from breaking, which leads to ingrown hairs. Work cautiously: “Women often overtweeze between brows. But full inner edges keep brows balanced and natural looking.”

2. Create an arch.

“The highest point of your arch should line up with the outside edge of your iris,” says Vucetaj. Put a dot of brow pencil slightly above your brow at this point. Next, color over your brows with the pencil to create your ideal shape, starting near the nose, working up to the dot, and moving down toward the temple. The shape should look like a sloped arc. Tweeze any hairs below the penciled-in area of the brow. Pluck above the brow only if you see an obvious hair; taking off too much from the top “flattens brows and makes you look tired.”

3. Even out and refine.

Step back from the mirror: Are your brows even? Is one a little fuller than the other? Fix discrepancies by plucking a single hair, then stepping back again to see the full picture. Often, removing one hair makes a visible difference. Next, tend to any extra-long pieces. “Brush brows upward, toward your forehead,” Vucetaj says, “and snip off the tips of hairs that extend beyond your shape.” Finally, examine where your brows end (near your temples). Imagine another diagonal line that extends from your nostril past the outer corner of your eye. Where your brow intersects this line is where it should end. Tweeze away any hairs outside this area. “You usually don’t need to remove much,” notes Vucetaj.

Neon Nails

Fluorescent lights don’t flatter our complexion—and neon shades on our nails don’t help, either. For 2010, it’s a softer, gentler nail color we crave. The spring colors from Yves Saint Laurent, Maybelline New York, and Essie (to name a few) include gorgeous pastel pink, blue, and lilac polishes. But beware: Matching pastel shades on hands and feet can be “a little nauseating,” says Ji Baek, owner of the Rescue Beauty Lounge nail salons in New York City. The experts recommend keeping nails short, and wearing a light shade on the hands and a richer version on toes. Until the new spring colors hit shelves in February, try the periwinkle Revlon Nail Enamel in Not So Blue-Berry, the pale purple OPI Nail Lacquer in Do You Lilac It?, and the aptly named Rescue Beauty Lounge polish in Pepto Pink.

K2’s Pink Chase Raises Over $30K for Breast Cancer Research. Yeah Baby.

December 20, 2009 By: ten20 Category: parties, pluck, polish, products

K2’s Pink Chase Raises Over $30K for Breast Cancer Research
Keystone Resort Hosts Women’s Snow Lovers Fundraiser

pink_chase_065
KEYSTONE, Colo. – With over $30,000 raised for breast cancer research and the BCRF, K2 last week wrapped up its second annual PINK CHASE fundraiser at Keystone Resort in Colorado. The field of 57 women skiers, snowboarders and tele skiers, composing 19 teams clad in a variety of creative pink costumes logged more than 687,260 vertical feet of skiing to raise funds for the cause.
Despite frigid temperatures, the women arrived in the early morning hours, energetic, and dressed from head to toe in an array of pink costumes—full piece bunny suits to Lady Gaga impersonators (team name: Gaga for Gnar of course), snow angels, and pink capes ready for a day of riding. Après started promptly at 3 p.m. at Parrot Eyes, followed by the awards ceremony mc’ed by K2’s very own Michael Powell. Mass quantities of giveaways were raffled to participants from the event sponsors, including Keystone Resort, Smith Optics, Orage, Colorado-based women’s outdoor retailer Outdoor DIVAS, Boulder’s local salon Ten20, and Bud Light. The PINK CHASE giveaway hats were the hit amongst the teams and Keystone apres’ers alike, and the party didn’t stop till Boulder local, DJ Shares, turned off his turntables.
While the photos captured many entertaining parts of the day, the true inspiration came from the stories shared by all.  Barbara Kish of Boulder, Colo., the recipient of the event’s Superstar award (kicking cancers behind) spoke on behalf of breast cancer survivors.  As a survivor herself in remission for six years, she left few dry eyes in the house, emphasizing the importance of fundraisers such as the PINK CHASE and raising money to find a cure.  All participants left the evening tired yet inspired, and already discussing strategies for next year’s PINK CHASE.
PINK CHASE is an annual event open to women skiers, snowboarders and tele skiers to raise funds for breast cancer research based on the total vertical feet they ride during a single day in December. To register for next year’s event, visit www.k2skis.com/pinkchase

World AIDS Day and First Friday Events

Call Dan at BCAP with any questions! 303.444.6121

Started on 1st December 1988, World AIDS Day is about increasing awareness, fighting prejudice, improving education and raising money. The World AIDS Day theme for 2009 is ‘Universal Access and Human Rights’. World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done.

We will start the day with an all-day presence on Pearl Street Mall (from 8am – 5pm), in front of the Courthouse, to let passers by know about World AIDS Day and the reality that AIDS is not over. We also want our community to remember! We also want people to know that AIDS is not over.

From 11am – 6pm, our friends at Art & Soul (1615 Pearl Street in Boulder) will be hosting our “Day without Art” and our AIDS Memorial in honor of those we have lost.

Free HIV Testing will be offered at Boulder County AIDS Project from 11am to 2pm. Know your status. Talk with your partner. Choose wisely.

At 12noon, local places of faith will ring their bells for ten minutes in honor of World AIDS Day.

This year BCAP welcomes the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus as we reflect and remember for our annual World AIDS Day Concert! Our long-time supporters at First United Methodist Church are hosting us for the concert.

Several local restaurants will donate a portion of their dinner sales this evening so that people going to the concert can drop in for a bite to eat before the concert and also support BCAP. The Cup, The Mountain Sun, Aji, and Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant will all donate 10% of their sales. The Cup is a coffee house and will be donating 10% of their sales for the whole day. All of these restaurants are within a couple of blocks of the First United Methodist Church.

Please join us!

We are gathering photos of loved ones who lost their battle with HIV/AIDS for our display of the AIDS Memorial at Art & Soul. Contact Dan if you would like to lend us a photo or two.

Tickets for the concert are $15.00.
Tickets can be purchased by calling 303.444.6121 or online.

We need the community’s support to engage, educate, and remember!

perhaps the perfect gift.

Healing distressed nails: Local experts give tips for healthy nails

Posted: 11/23/2009 07:20:58 PM MST

Care for your nails, and they will care for you. Word. ( photographer Valua Vitaly )

Splitting, brittle and weak fingernails are a common — but repairable — plague.

“I have this split down my pointer finger nail and I can’t get rid of it,” said Rachel Durmingham, of Boulder. “I just paint over it because it constantly glares at me.”

Dry weather, dehydration, cheap nail polish and hand washing all play a role in unhealthy nails.

The No. 1 tip from Kristin Domenico, a cosmetologist at Ten 20 on Pearl Street, is for the body to remain hydrated.

“Drinking a lot of water always helps,” Domenico said. “Then, keep a good natural nail strengthener around. It’s always good to keep two or three layers on your nails at all times.”

Domenico recommended OPI nail strengthener or Sally Hansen as a good budget buy. Nail strengtheners can help fortify soft or weak nails that are prone to cracking, splitting or breaking.

Sharon McTighe, an esthetician and nail technician at Marianna’s L’Esthetique Medi Spa in Boulder, recommended applying cuticle oil to help nourish the nails.

“The nail originates down at the base, called the matrix,” McTighe said. “If you keep that well-lubricated, as the nail grows out, it helps it to be healthy.”

McTighe also said lathering with hand cream after every handwashing can help.

Both experts advised wearing rubber gloves when submerging hands in water for more than a minute or two.

Although nail polish can dry out the nails, the experts said the formaldehyde and toluene-free polishes provide a healthier option.

Formaldehyde and toluene are known as quick-drying agents in the polish, but Domenico and McTighe said the nails are better off without the toxins.

Both experts recommend a monthly manicure as beneficial to nail health.

“Manicures not only clip away the dead skin and push back the cuticles,” Domenico said. “But if we do see a split down deep in the nail bed, we can try to buff it and repair it.”

Monthly manicures can even help with keeping an eye on pre-cancerous moles that lie underneath the nail, Domenico said.

“You can develop little tiny moles — even sometimes the size of the tip of the pin,” Domenico said. “Once we see you regularly, we can monitor it and let you know if you need to go to the dermatologist.”

McTighe said it is important to keep an eye on the toenails, too, especially in the winter.

She said feet remaining inside a hot pair of boots all winter could turn into fungus that is often hard to see.

“I know a lot of people skip pedicures in the winter, but it’s important to continue the habit for the health of the toes,” McTighe said.

Nail care tips

– Take a daily multivitamin

– Most nail polishes expire after about a year

– When painting the nails with a darker coat, use a base color first to keep the nails from yellowing

– Use a non-acetone nail polish remover, as acetone is stronger and drying

– If the nails are yellow from polish, submerge them in a denture cream (like Efferdent) for a minute to remove the discoloration

get your holiday on.

I was flipping through photos of a recent trip to Uganda when I noticed something I’d never seen before: A burly, straight-faced African man staring at the camera, wearing a tight, pink sweatshirt with cats embroidered across it. The cats were tangled in balls of yarn.

This is one of the reasons I love guys in Africa.

This man could probably crush a dozen Boulder triathletes between his pointer and thumb. He had likely survived slaughter by rebels, been living on his own since he was a child and could probably kill a black mamba with his teeth. Yet here he stood, rocking a pink kitty sweatshirt — unapologetically.

African men understand something that most Americans just don’t get: That your character — and with that, your style; your essence — comes from the way you lead your life and carry yourself, and not simply from what society says is masculine, feminine, hip or sexy.

Straight African men hold hands — with other men. (Gasp!) I remember one guy who regularly painted his toenails: bright blue with sparkles. Now, I don’t know where he got the polish on a refugee camp, but he was known as the man with the blue toes. He was respected for his blue toes, and moreover, how those toes carried him as one of the camp’s leaders.

Last year, my color of self-expression was old-fashioned cherry red. I felt melancholic and classic, yet bold.

This summer, I felt like the brightest pink I could find: loud, playful, a little silly and dramatic. Then, as homage to a more enigmatic femininity, I morphed into orange, the color of the “sacral” or pelvic chakra.

Now, it’s fall, and as I watch my life dramatically change with the seasons, I am searching for the new color that speaks to me.

I talked to Heather Smith, a fashion pro and the spokesperson for Boulder’s Ten20 Spa. Smith’s toenails are Pamplana Purple, a deep plum that is part of OPI’s fall Espana collection.

For Smith, equally as important as the color is the fact that Pamplana Purple is eco-friendly. She calls it “three-free,” meaning it contains no dibutyl phthalate, toluene or formaldehyde.

The new polish colors this fall are rich, Smith says: dark chocolate, coffee and deep mauve, instead of hot pink. Runways have shown deep orange, she says.

I’m intrigued, but I still don’t feel connected.

Then, she tells me about a dark turquoise, “for people who still like a lighter color in the fall, but feel a little deeper than the summer.” I check out opi.com and find a turquoise called “Sea? I told you!” It feels right. And just in case it’s not, she reminds me that Ten20 lets you try on a few colors before you commit.

Just call me the woman with the (not sparkly) turquoise toes.

A pedicure at Ten20 is $38 and includes a full soak, cuticle work, buffing, massage, foot file and polish.

Ten20 serves free M&Ms and Diet Cokes and has a big-screen that plays favorite flicks, including “Sex and the City.” Check out ten20.tv for more information.

Even if you can’t afford a pedicure, you can buy your own bottle of polish here and bring it home to do yourself. Pick up a free nail file, an at-home foot soak, lotion and oil and make your own spa. Or buy a bottle to touch up after your pedicure to make it last longer.

Also check out Essie’s matte colors (not currently available at Ten20). I love shiny toenails, but matte fingernails look a little punk and a lot unique.
